SCARS Impact Profile: Changing Lives, Strengthening Community

At Second Chance After Release Services (SCARS), we believe that a person’s past should not permanently bar them from a productive future. Our impact is measured not just in numbers, but in restored families, safer neighborhoods, and economic growth.

The Challenge

Every year, thousands of individuals return to our community from incarceration. Without a structured support system, the obstacles are often insurmountable:

  • 76% of formerly incarcerated individuals are rearrested within five years.
  • 60% remain unemployed one year after release.
  • Housing instability is the primary driver of immediate recidivism.

The SCARS Solution: Our Impact by the Numbers

Through our holistic “Whole-Person” reintegration model, SCARS is flipping the script on re-entry.

1. Breaking the Cycle of Recidivism

While national recidivism rates hover near 70%, SCARS participants (future target) is to maintain a success rate significantly higher than the average.

  • Our Goal: To keep recidivism among SCARS graduates below 15%.
  • The Result: Every individual who does not return to prison saves the taxpayer an average of $45,000 per year in incarceration costs.

2. Economic Empowerment & Workforce Development

We transform “tax consumers” into “taxpayers” by bridging the gap between release and the workplace.

  • Job Placement: (Our target) is that 85% of our vocational program graduates will secure full-time employment within 90 days.
  • Social ROI: For every $1 invested in SCARS vocational training, the community sees a $6.00 return in increased economic activity and reduced public assistance costs.

3. Housing as a Foundation

Stability begins with a front door key.

  • Safe Shelter: We will provided a safe, sober transitional housing.
  • Zero Homelessness: 100% of SCARS residential participants avoid homelessness during their first year of release.

Beyond the Numbers: Human Impact

Family Reunification

Incarceration separates parents from children. SCARS will be assisting parents with meeting the legal and financial requirements to reunite with their families, breaking the intergenerational cycle of the justice system.

Restoring Dignity

We provide more than services; we provide a community. Through our Peer Mentorship Program, our alumni will contribute hours of volunteer service, proving that those who were once part of the problem are now the leaders of the solution.
